There are some personal assistant job duties that can be extremely time consuming and challenging, yet there are also some that are quite simple and more suited for a receptionist than a PA. The type of duties a PA will be expected to carry out will depend on the industry that the employer is working in, the position of the employer, and of course their personality. However, there are a few general duties that most personal assistants will find themselves doing on a regular basis.
One of the main duties of a PA is to handle communications with colleagues, associates, clients etc., on behalf of the employer. This means time spent composing emails, making phone calls, and meeting with various individuals that the employer interacts with as part of his or her business. Over the course of their personal assistant career, a PA will become very skilled at selecting the appropriate tone and wording depending on whom he or she is corresponding with at the time. A personal assistant who excels in this area will be of great use to their employer.
The other most common personal assistant job duty is to deal with paperwork and scheduling. You need to know your employer's schedule very well, and arrange appointments in the most appropriate manner, so that he or she is able to get their work done efficiently. Balancing these appointments properly is very important, and other administrative duties required usually involve note-taking and typing up letters and other reports. You need to be very organized in order to do this aspect of a personal assistant's job.
Finally, there tends to be a lot of personal assistant duties that involve running errands and solving problems. This is especially true of a celebrity assistant, who may find themselves in strange places at late hours trying to make their employer happy by filling a very specific request. A demanding employer may simply drop problems onto their personal assistant's lap with the command to "fix it." This can lead to some creative solutions as the PA tries to get the results needed.
As you can see, the personal assistant job duties that you could be asked to do will cover a wide range of areas. From paperwork to running errands, to balancing schedules and acting as the first point of contact for anyone who wants to speak to your employer. You could love working for one boss, and enjoy the types of duties required, but hate the job requirements of another boss in a similar industry and position. It will all depend on your interests and skills, and what the employer expects.
